چکیده

A known acoustic flow is generated and input to a physical (hardware) model of a vocal tract at its ’glottis’. The output sound is measured, along with the gain of the tract (the transpedance or transimpedance: the ratio of output pressure to input flow). These allow all stages of the Source–Filter model to be illustrated by actual experimental measurements on the same physical model in the time and frequency domains, rather than by the usual qualitative, illustrative sketches.

Experimental evaluation of inverse filtering using physical systems with known glottal flow and tract characteristics.

The technique presented here uses an impedance head to measure the input impedance spectrum of a physical model of a vocal tract, and then to inject a known glottal flow waveform into the tract. The sound measured outside the mouth is used to evaluate inverse filtering techniques by comparison with the known glottal flow and measured acoustical properties of the tract. The normalized least squa...

Joint Estimation of Voice Source and Vocal Tract Parameters as Applied to the Study of Voice Source Dynamics

A novel method is presented for the joint estimation of voice source and vocal tract (formant/anti-formant) parameters from the acoustic speech signal. The method is based on the ARX (auto-regressive with exogenous input) model with a glottal flow waveform as an input to the system. A nonlinear optimization strategy is employed to estimate glottal flow parameters, whereas an extended Kalman fil...

An acoustic glottal source for vocal tract physical models

A sound source was proposed for acoustic measurements of physical models of the human vocal tract. The physical models are produced by Fast Prototyping, based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging during prolonged vowel production. The sound source, accompanied by custom signal processing algorithms, is used for two kinds of measurements: (i) amplitude frequency response and resonant frequency measurem...

Analyzing the effect of secondary excitations of the vocal tract on vocal intensity in different loudness conditions

For voiced speech the main excitation of the vocal tract occurs at the end of the glottal closing phase when the rate of change of the flow reaches its absolute maximum. This study presents a straightforward method that yields a numerical value to characterize the effect of the main excitation on vocal intensity. The method, Energy Ratio by Modified Excitation (ERME), takes advantage of the glo...

The GlottHMM Entry for Blizzard Challenge 2011: Utilizing Source Unit Selection in HMM-Based Speech Synthesis for Improved Excitation Generation

This paper describes the GlottHMM speech synthesis system for Blizzard Challenge 2011. GlottHMM is a hidden Markov model (HMM) based speech synthesis system that utilizes glottal inverse filtering for separating the vocal tract and the glottal source from speech signal and models both components individually. In this year’s entry, stabilized weighted linear prediction (SWLP) is used to yield mo...
